Obituary for Vernell Childs Guy

Vernell Childs Guy was born on August 20, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Tom Childs and Ida Rodriguez Childs. Vernell accepted Christ as a teenager at the Denver Heights Church of God In Christ. She continued her Christian journey attending Greater Evangelist Temple Church of God In Christ. Vernell was under the spiritual leadership of the three pastors of Greater Evangelist Temple Church of God In Christ, Elder Bev Anthony, Supt. C.W. Steward and Pastor Verell L. Nelson. Mother Guy was an active member of the church. She served in the choir, on the Mother’s Board, and she taught Junior Church. She also served by being the sanctuary housekeeper. Vernell received her early education in the San Antonio Private School System. She attended Holy Redeemer School for Girls, ranking within the top 10% of her class. She was also offered an opportunity to become a nun. Vernell continued her education by attending St. Phillips Community College. Upon graduating, she earned her degree in Nursing. After 35 years of dedicated service, Mother Guy officially retired from the Robert B. Green Hospital. Prior to that she was employed as a private duty nurse and worked in the Hospitality Industry. Mother Guy was saved, sanctified, and filled with the holy ghost. The outward manifestation of her love for Christ was not limited to the confines of the church. Mother has been known to be in complete praise mode at work, in the grocery store, at home and even when driving. Her worn, torn, tattered bible was always within arm’s reach. Mother Guy lived the life that she preached. Being a virtuous woman, she strategically implemented effective witnessing as the cornerstone of her ministry. She was well respected in the community, well loved by family and friends, and well versed in godly living. Mother Guy was avid supporter of Testimonies of God’s Greatness. Vernell was married to Joseph Guy Sr. This union remained as one until his demise. Mother was preceded in death by her sons Joseph and Gregory Guy, parents, Tom Childs and Ida Rodriguez Childs, brothers, Tommy, David, Henry, Eddie, and Daniel, sisters, Fern, Mildred, Melrose, and Vivian. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Gayle Hamilton and Joy Guy Blake of San Antonio. Vernell’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great- great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends will also cherish fond memories of her. She will be remembered by her Greater Evangelist Temple Church of God in Christ family as a faithful member.
