Mary Earls Coleman, the daughter of Mace Earls and Charles Bell, was born in Austin, Texas on May 16, 1939. After her grandmother and mother passed, she relocated to San Antonio, Texas in 1955, where she attended St. Peter Claver Academy. In 1956, she transferred to Phyllis Wheatley High School, where she graduated in 1957.
